Why I’ll never bleach my hair again

Hello All! Let me get down to the nitty gritty…

I’ve been dying my hair since I was 18. My natural color is a medium brown and I’ve never really loved it. I’ve been every color from blonde to dark brown to burgundy and then to black and have been ever since…well past tense…was.

black hair, don’t care

Now after years of having black hair, I felt it was time for a change. I don’t have a current acting gig so I wanted to do something with a little edge. I’d seen a lot of posts with men dying their hair gray or silver. I loved the idea of that look and thought, it’s now or never. I called a local reputable salon and had an extensive conversation over the phone about my hair and what I wanted to do. She assured me this was possible and we made the appointment. Well here we go..

It’s 12:00pm and I’ve arrived promptly for my appointment with the colorist. I explained everything to him that I had already covered the day before. He assured me that it was totally doable, but it would be a lengthy process, at least two hours. I reiterated that as long as it was safe, I was ready.

Fast forward to the first bleach process.

Here goes nothing, 40 mins of the first bleaching

It started fine. I was asked to let them know if I felt any sort of burning. I felt nothing but a slight tingling, which I was told was normal. All was good. I was then sat under a heat dryer and still nothing. After around 40 mins of waiting they proceeded to wash out the first process. Here were the results.

Wow! As you can see, what was once black was now a fiery red color. Not quite what I needed to get that gray color that I wanted to achieve. So, the stylist said we needed a second bleaching. Once again, I was assured it would be totally safe and that this was normal in removing a color like black. “Okay, you’re the professionals”, I thought. So I went in for another treatment followed by more heat and another wash..

looks fine to me…

Now after another 40 minutes, the color looked right, but I started to worry. I didn’t feel burning, but I started to feel like it was a lot of bleach in one day. Not only that, but the tingling I had felt earlier seemed to be getting stronger. I spoke up, and the stylist said not to worry, again the tingling was normal. He then said we should go ahead and wash it out to see the results. After the wash, he told me I had some more small dark spots that he needed to take care of. More??? This is now seeming like overkill. He then proceeded to mix a lighter bleach with shampoo and kept me at the sink, followed by a light gray and purple shampoo.

Well, I was finally done and ready to see the results. I was anxious and excited. I sat in front of the mirror only to see that my hair looked like it was gone! Little did I know, but my hair had all practically broken off in that last wash. I was so upset and distraught. I asked the colorist what happened and he said it happens sometimes where some hair will break off. Well this was A LOT of my hair! He proceeded to tell me that my hair was thin and probably shouldn’t have had all that process. He also said the color I wanted didn’t seem to want to take to my hair. I reminded that that I was vocal about this the entire time. All I was thinking at this moment was, “get me out of this salon now!” I was devastated.

Needless to say, after five hours at the salon, with broken and ruined hair, I did not pay for the process and was given every apology under the sun.

After I left, I drove straight home and decided the only real option was to buzz my hair completely to even out what was left. On top of all of this..the tingling I was feeling? Yeah, that was my skin burning. I was told that the tingling was normal and only if it hurts is it bad. I woke up the next day with scabs on my hairline and it took about two weeks to go away. Anyway, with all that, I’ve learned my lesson. But at the end of the day, I’ll survive. And my hair will grow back. With it being summer, it’s not terrible. It’s definitely low maintenance and feels great when it’s super hot out. And I own a lot of hats so…lol

So that’s why I’ll never bleach my hair again. I know what you’re thinking. Why didn’t you research it more? Why did you let them put so much in your hair. Why? why? I guess because it was my first time doing this and I trusted what I thought were professionals. My advice for anyone looking to do this? Do your homework. Don’t just trust the person behind the chair. Read up on the do’s and don’ts of bleach. You’ll save yourself a lot of time and all of your locks too.

I’ll leave you here with some positivity in self love. Until next time.

Spring and Summer Fashion Dos

Hi Everyone. Hope you’re all having a glorious week.

Spring is here! The pollen is in the air (insert sneeze), the flowers are in bloom and we’re gearing up for those barbecues and weekend getaways.

I wanted to share with you my thoughts on this seasons fashion dos and what I like to add to my own personal style.

In the spring and summer months I’m all about comfortability with an edge. I love to wear printed tees with a pop of color or prints with a solid counterpart. And of course you have to accessorize!

We all want to get out and enjoy that beautiful weather, now why not do it with a look that’ll pop?

Here are some of my favorite ideas for the season.

Short sleeve prints

(From left to right) Topman; Folk; Zaraman

Now I know it can get hot these summer months, but it doesn’t mean your look has to suffer. I love wearing lightweight short sleeve printed button down shirts that show some personality and they just happen to be in this season. Go for a fun floral or even a geometric pattern. If that feels too much for you, choose a nice fun color and a printed shirt. It’s all about mixing and matching.

Short shorts

L TO R: VERSACE, DIOR, DUNHILL, FENDI, WOOYOUNGMI, ALEXANDER MCQUEEN, OLIVER SPENCER, LOUIS VUITTON, DOLCE & GABBANA, ERMENEGILDO ZEGNA.

Yep, you read that right. The short short is very in this season. I love a shorter short anyway, especially when it’s so hot outside you can’t take it. Let those legs breathe, ha! Again, it’s all in the proportion. The print or style is based on your preference, so show off those legs!

Minimalist sneakers

Keep it simple. A white sneaker is such a classic look and goes with anything. It’s such a nice balance if you’re wearing prints on top. If you’re not into a white shoe for fear of getting them dirty (though a magic eraser works wonders), go with a classic sneaker. The classics are back this season.

Sandals

(ASOS)

Let your feet breathe. 2019 is bringing the hiking sandal into the forefront. When I’m not into wearing sneakers, I love to opt for more of an elevated version of a black leather strap sandal. It really gives your look a more sophisticated and modern feel.

Handbags

(from left to right: Herschel; Coach)

I don’t know about you, but in the spring/summer season, I always need somewhere to put my loose items; like my phone and wallet. Who wants bulky pockets? It’s always a struggle when it’s warmer because we aren’t wearing jackets to hold those things. Well, a big trend this season is the handbag. I always love having a bag with me anyway, but lately I’ve fallen in love with my waist pack. Not only does it hold my wallet and phone, it turns into a fun accessory. If you’re not into that, a simple strap bag will do the trick.

Accessories

Top and L to R: LL Bean; Alice made this; Zaraman, Bailey of Hollywood

There are some go to items, in my opinion, that are always in style. These are some things I love to incorporate into my looks. If your wearing a solid tee, add a bandana or even a necklace. If you like an all around simple look, add a bracelet or watch or a ring or two. Top it off with a cool pork pie fedora. Do you! Adding these little details just adds that extra touch to what your style is.

So those are some of my my dos for this season. Do you have any faves you love to incorporate into your look?

Just remember to be confident and dress how you want to feel. Embrace your own style. And just by adding those little touches, you’ll elevate your fashion.

Peace,

Patrick

The Journey Begins

Thanks for joining me!

Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. — Izaak Walton

Who am I? Here’s a little background of me….

My name is Patrick. I am an actor currently living on the east coast with my Husband of 3 years. Actor you say? Yes, but I originally hail from Reno, NV (they call it the Biggest Little City in the World).

I was one of those young fresh faced kids who was in every play in high school, performed in all the choir competitions etc. I had dreams bigger than Reno, NV. So upon graduation, I packed my bags and set out to NYC to attend an acting conservatory and to one day make it big!

Well years later, I’ve enjoyed this roller coaster of a life working in my field. Have I “made it big”? It depends on what you mean by big, ha! I’ve had the chance to do live theater, be on soap operas and even record several voiceovers. I’ve realized as I’ve gotten older that getting the chance to do what I love, and get paid for it, is far more important than anything else. In this career jobs are sometimes few and far between, so you have to “make it work” as they say. I’ve catered, bartended, cold called, you name it! But every time I book that acting gig? Everything falls into place

My point is, I always say to make the best of what life throws at you. Sometimes we have to hustle to get to where we need to be. As long as you’re positive and happy, then you’re living a great life.

So that’s a bit about me…I’ve gotten to do a lot of fun and exciting things. But one thing I’ve never done is write a blog..so here are the reasons why I decided to do this.

Fashion

I’ve always loved fashion. Since I can remember my Sister coming to visit when I was just a young tween. She was modeling in Hollywood and would come with the most amazing designer outfits. Beautiful bright and bold patterns, leather jackets, you name it. She did campaigns for Diet Coke, L.A Looks and more. I was inspired and hooked! I knew who Jean Paul Gaultier was before Madonnas cone shaped bra, ha!I loved the individuality she showed with her sense of style. Since then I’ve always loved fashion and wearing what makes you feel great.

I’m a lover of shopping new trends to mix with my own individual self. Friends have always complimented my personal style and asked for help with their own personal shopping. This felt like a perfect opportunity to share what I love about my own individual style.

Travel

I love to travel. I remember my first trip to Disney when I was four. Yep, I’m one of those Disnerds. So much so, I’ve even worked for them aboard the Disney Cruise Line performing as a Mainstage performer. Yeah, remember I said I liked to travel. Well, this was the perfect way to do that and get to still perform, and GET PAID!

I’ve been to Italy, Spain, France, The Bahamas, Eastern/Southern/Western Caribbean, Mexico, Portugal, Colombia just to name a few! All from a ship. I’ve had the fortune to see some beautiful places. Another reason to share some of those adventures here.

lifestyle

I live a life of love and peace. I believe what you put out is what you get in return. I live my life in positivity. My philosophy in life is happiness. Now maybe that sounds like a generalized statement, but it is. Because for each person, happiness means something different. So get yours. For me, happiness is my Husband, my work, my friends, my sense of being and self worth. Now, I’m not saying I’m perfect and I don’t have bad days. I wouldn’t be human if I didn’t. But I always go back to happiness and self love. As the one and only RuPaul herself says, “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else? Can I get an amen up in here?”

So that’s me…I’m here to share my love of fashion, travel and lifestyle in an open and passionate forum. If you’re into it, please join me and keep on reading. And if you’re not, I wish you well.
